Startup World Cup 2025 Awards $1 Million Grand Prize to Coreshell

On October 17, 2025, East Bay battery company, Coreshell, was awarded the $1 million grand prize at the Startup World Cup Grand Finale in San Francisco, beating out thousands of startups around the world. The Startup World Cup is an annual global competition organized by Pegasus Tech Ventures, which hosts 100 regional competitions around the world. Coreshell was also the Technology Awardee at the 2025 East Bay Innovation Awards. Congratulations to Coreshell, and learn more about their innovative battery technology and scale-up plans in the San Francisco Business Times. Prior to the Grand Finale, Coreshell participated and won the Start Up World Cup East Bay Regional, an event created and hosted by the East Bay Small Business Development Center (SBDC).

 

Laney College Helps Power the Bay Area’s Clean Energy Future

Laney College is teaming up with the Bay Area Community College Consortium (BACCC), Electrochemistry Foundry (ECF), and Volta Foundation to launch a new project that will prepare students for high-demand careers in battery technology—one of the fastest-growing clean-energy sectors in California, fueled by innovation happening in the East Bay. The Electrochemistry Foundry was recently awarded $28 million from the California Energy Commission to build a shared-use, nonprofit pilot manufacturing facility in Hayward. Read about the emerging initiative.

 

BioMADE’s Pilot Facility is Set to Open in 2026

The 25,000 square foot facility in Hayward, CA, aims to open in 2026 and will expand domestic bioindustrial manufacturing capabilities, strengthen national security, and secure domestic supply chains for needed materials. BioMADE will independently operate the pilot-scale facility as the second announced site in its national network of bioindustrial manufacturing infrastructure. Visit BioMADE to learn more about this cutting-edge facility.

 

California’s Future of Fusion Report

San Diego Economic Development Corporation’s recent report, “Catalyzing CA’s Fusion Advantage: Roadmap to Commercialization,” found that California’s fusion energy sector could generate up to $125 billion in economic impact and support over 40,000 jobs statewide, with the right support of commercialization and state policy decisions. For the East Bay, this presents a major opportunity to leverage its existing strengths in advanced manufacturing, research institutions, and clean tech innovation. With Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory’s leadership in fusion technology and numerous fusion companies spinning out in the East Bay, the region has become an emerging hub for fusion research and talent. Read the report.

 

Passage of Senate Bill 86 Extends Clean Energy Tax Incentives

The recent passage of Senate Bill 86 (McNerney) extends the California Alternative Energy and Advanced Transportation Financing Authority sales and use tax exclusion program through 2028 and expands eligibility to include fusion energy projects. This keeps California competitive for advanced manufacturing investment and ensures communities and workers benefit. Read the announcement.
